Enforcement Education

Bike Cleveland partners with WE BIKE, etc. to assist with the implementation of a Pedestrian and Bicycle Law Enforcement Training Program to help improve pedestrian and bicycle safety across Greater Cleveland. The training program, a partnership between bicycle advocacy and local law enforcement, provides police departments with the following state and national pedestrian and bicycle safety/education materials and training at no cost:

• Enforcement for Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety brochure
• Pedestrian and bicycle safety education resources
• Pedestrian and bicycle safety roll call videos (see below)
• Self-paced, computer-based pedestrian and bicycle safety training

These resources are part of a continuum of training, leading up to a series of in-person seminars meant to enhance the skills of law enforcement professionals in relation to laws to help prevent bicyclist and pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Below are the training opportunities taking place in 2017.

Two-day Enforcement for Pedestrian & Bicyclist Safety seminar.

As a component of the law enforcement training program Bike Cleveland is hosting a two-day Enforcement for Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety course taught by Peter Flucke of WE BIKE. In the training, officers will learn the what, where, when, how, who & why of walking and bicycling; components of the Highway Safety Triangle; pedestrian and bicycle environment audits; how pedestrian & bicycle crashes happen; pedestrian & bicycle laws; crash investigating & reporting; potential law enforcement partners; and more. This course is appropriate for all law enforcement officers. Training details are below:

Enforcement for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Seminar

Date: Monday, April 24th – Tuesday, April 25th
Time: 8:30am-4:30pm
Cost: FREE, instructor and materials paid for by Bike Cleveland.
Place: Cleveland Metroparks Operations Office (4500 Valley Parkway, Fairview Park, OH 44126)
Deadline: RSVP are required by April 7th. Space is limited to register early.

You are required to attend both days of the training.

Enforcement Professional Development Bike Ride

As a component of the law enforcement training program Bike Cleveland is hosting a 5 hour professional development  bike ride and seminar for law enforcement officers. The ride will help law enforcement officers understand:

1. The issues cyclists face when interacting with motor vehicles.
2. What it’s like to ride a bicycle in a range of situations.
3. Why cyclists make the choices they do, and how roadway design influences those decisions.
4. How a few feet of space can make or break a rider’s sense of place and safety.
5. Best practices in enforcement for active transportation issues.

Law Enforcement Professional Development Bike Ride and Seminar

Date: Wednesday, April 26th
Time: 8:30am-2pm
Cost: FREE, instructor and materials paid for by Bike Cleveland.
Place: Cleveland Metroparks Operations Office (4500 Valley Parkway, Fairview Park, OH 44126)
Deadline: RSVP are required by April 7th. Space is limited to register early.

Participants are required to bring their own working bicycle and helmet, and be prepared to ride 4-6 miles at a moderate pace (don’t worry, there will be plenty of stops for rest and discussion). 

Instructor Course: Enforcement for Pedestrian & Bicyclist Safety Instructor Course

As a component of the law enforcement training program Bike Cleveland is hosting a two-day train-the-trainer course for past graduates of our Enforcement for Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety course taught by Peter Flucke of WE BIKE. In the training, officers will learn how to teach other officers the what, where, when, how, who & why of walking and bicycling; components of the Highway Safety Triangle; pedestrian and bicycle environment audits; how pedestrian & bicycle crashes happen; pedestrian & bicycle laws; crash investigating & reporting; potential law enforcement partners; and more. Again, this course is meant for officers in a training role and who have completed the student Enfocement for Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety course. Training details are below:

Date: Thursday, April 27th – Friday, April 28th
Time: 8:30am-4:30pm
Cost: FREE, instructor and materials paid for by Bike Cleveland.
